Social History

Vattamkulam Grama Panchayat is believed to have derived its name from a circular pond (“Vattathulla Kulam”) and a sacred grove (“Kavu”) situated on its banks. The Panchayat possesses a renowned Vedic tradition and a rich folk culture. The historically important village of Sukapuram, associated with Vedic culture, is situated within this Panchayat. The region has long been regarded as a center of Vedic education and sacrificial rituals.

At the same time, progressive movements against the conservatism of traditional Vedic practices also emerged among the Namboothiris of this region. This cultural background helped national renaissance movements take root and flourish here. One of the most notable characteristics of the area, where Hindus and Muslims have lived together for generations, is its strong tradition of communal harmony.

After India attained independence, socio-political organizations, libraries, and cultural associations began functioning actively in the region. These movements encouraged the people to welcome the social changes brought about by reform movements. The grand conference of the Yogakshema Sabha held at Kuttippala in 1945 stands as a historical testimony to this progressive movement.

Distinguished personalities who contributed significantly to the social progress of the region include S. M. Balakrishna Pisharadi, the first President of the Panchayat and a social reformer; K. V. Balamenon, who served both as Panchayat President and public activist; Mukkadekkatt Muhammedunni Sahib, Muslim League leader and social worker; K. P. Madhava Menon, an early activist of the Left movement; and Thottupurathu Parameswaran Namboothiri.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, agriculture was the primary livelihood of most people except for a few. The agrarian social structure consisted of landlords, tenants, leaseholders, and agricultural laborers. Except for around 40 acres of land near the Manur Kayal on the western boundary of the Panchayat, all other paddy fields cultivated two crops annually. Puncha cultivation was practiced in the Manur Kayal region.

After the second harvest, vegetables, sesame, pulses, and tapioca were cultivated, while Nendran banana was grown in sandy paddy fields after the first crop. Vattamkulam was especially famous for its “Kazchakkula” banana variety and “Kanivellari” cucumber.

Electricity first reached the Panchayat in November 1957 at the mill owned by A. R. Ramaswami Iyer.
